William “Bill” Simon

December 16, 1941 ~ September 7, 2018

William E. (Bill) Simon passed away September 7, 2018 at home after an eight month battle to overcome the disabling effects of a series of strokes. He was born on December 16, 1941 in St. Louis, Missouri and and moved with his family to Wing, Al as a young boy. After graduating from Pleasant Home High School in 1959, he joined the U. S. Army and trained to become a helicopter mechanic. He later worked as an aircraft mechanic for Fairchild Industries and quickly attained the position of Supervisor. He then began his career as a C130 mechanic for the U.S. Government at Duke Field and as a member of the U. S. Airforce Reserve. He was deployed to Afghanistan during the Gulf War. He retired from both in 1998. He loved anything mechanical, especially cars. He loved drag racing and dirt track racing and attended races regularly. After purchasing his dream car, a 1957 Chevy he and his wife joined the local classic car club, the Spanish Trail Cruisers, and enjoyed the activities and friendships of being a member.

His family would like to thank all of the therapist and medical personnel who worked so hard to help him recover. We also want to acknowledge all of the friends and family members who extended their love, support and prayers. You will never know how much it meant to us.

Bill is preceded in death by his father, Oliver Simon and his mother and stepfather Miriam and Pete Davis. Also, his wife Peggy Kilpatrick Simon, son Stephen and daughter Suzanne. He is survived by his wife Sandra Bulger Simon, Daughter Cynthia Simon McKinney and grandchildren Matthew, Caitlin and Christian McKinney and step-son John Hart and step-grandson Devin Hart. He is also survived by his brother Richard Simon and wife Wanda of Waco, Texas, as well as 2 nephews and a niece. Other survivors are his cousins and his special friends who were like family to him.

Visitation for Bill will be held on September 11,2018 at Whitehurst Funeral Home from 6 to 8 PM. The funeral will be held at Whitehurst Chapel at 10:00 AM on Wednesday, September 12, with Dr Charlie Fowler officiating.  Burial will follow at Beda Cemetery in Wing, Al.
