Another Duke Family Pioneer, SMSgt Almon “Al" Monday passed away at his home in Pensacola on Monday, 26 September after months of battling Cystic Fibrosis and other heart related issues. He was one the first, as a Loadmaster, who came to Duke in the early 70s and helped make the 711SOS one of the best flying squadrons in the Air Force Reserve. After converting to AC-130A Gunships in 1975 he became one of the Senior leaders in the newly formed Aerial Gunner Section where he spent 20 years as an instructor mentoring countless Airmen until his retirement in 1995. AL will always be remembered for his direction, sense of humor and strong bond he had formed with his fellow Gunners. He served the 919th SOW and his country with great pride and will definitely be missed by all of those that knew him, especially his fellow Gunners and Duke Field Family.
Please keep his family in your thoughts and prayers as they go through this extremely difficult time.
